Federico Penelas

Federico Penelas

PhD in Philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires. Independent Researcher at CONICET and Full Professor of Philosophy of Language at the Faculty of Humanities, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. He is also Associate Professor of Philosophy of Language at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, UBA.

He specializes in Epistemology and Philosophical Semantics, with special interest in Pragmatism (classical and post-analytic) and in the links between these areas and Political Philosophy. He coordinates three research groups at the Argentine Society for Philosophical Analysis (SADAF): Pragmatism (since 2012), Epistemology (since 2017), and Semantic Normativity (since 2019).

He is the author of Wittgenstein (Buenos Aires, Galerna 2020) and has published numerous articles in prestigious academic journals. He was President of the Argentine Philosophical Association (AFRA) in 2018-2019 and is currently Vice President of the Richard Rorty Society.

PhD in Philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires, with postdoctoral studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Assistant Researcher at CONICET and Associate Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, where she teaches Introduction to Scientific Thinking in the common basic cycle and Social Epistemology in the Philosophy degree.

She has also taught several undergraduate and doctoral courses at the National University of La Plata, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the National University of Tres de Febrero (Argentina).

Her areas of expertise include social and individual epistemology and legal epistemology. She has published in national and international journals from Brazil, Chile, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, England, and the United States. She is a member of the Latin American Legal Epistemology Network and the Latin American Network of Women in Evidence Law.

PhD in Philosophy from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Works in philosophy of education, both in neopragmatism and classical pragmatism (especially Dewey). His scientific discipline covers Philosophy and Psychology, specializing in Philosophy of language and psychology.

His theoretical inquiries include: the question of meaning and senses, how we come to language, the relationship between experience and language, the impact of education in our lives, and the nature of social concepts and the normativity of education.

Recent publications: “Art as Occupations. Two Neglected Roots of John Dewey’s Aesthetics” (2022, The Pluralist) and “Pragmatism, Method and Education: Dewey and Rorty on How We Think” (2022, Análisis Filosófico). He is also a writer and published Podrías haber llegado, a book of short stories.

Professor in the Master’s Thesis Workshop in Philosophy (UNQ), in the Theory of Argumentation course (FaHCE, UNLP) and at Colegio Nacional (UNLP).

His areas of interest are philosophy of knowledge, political philosophy and philosophy of science. Specialist in John Dewey, with works on Dewey’s theory of social conflict and his philosophy of democracy.

Editor of the books El conocimiento como práctica (Publicaciones FaHCE, 2014) and El aula abierta (Edulp, 2023).

Research lines: impacts of the Argentine Civil and Commercial Code on judicial decision-making, probative value of statistical evidence, proof of discriminatory actions (conceptual and epistemological dimensions), analysis of the “Castillo” case (2017) on religious education in Salta, and legislative deference in tax matters.

He holds a Licenciatura in Philosophy and is a Doctoral Fellow at CONICET. His research focuses on Theory of Knowledge and Philosophy of Language, and is finishing his dissertation on the philosophy of language and logic of Robert Brandom.

His research areas include Philosophy of Language, Social Epistemology, and Philosophical Naturalism. He has worked on topics related to pragmatism, particularly on Richard Rorty, Robert Brandom, Donald Davidson and philosophy of logic.

He is affiliated to the Argentine Society for Philosophical Analysis (SADAF), and coordinates (along Bruno Muntaabski) the Semantic Normativity group (CONTINGENCIA) in SADAF. He is also the co-coordinator of the group on Evaluation of Large Language Models (REFERENTIA) along with Ramiro Caso and Joaquín Toranzo Calderón, also located in SADAF.

Doctoral fellow at the Institute of Philosophical Research of SADAF. Has presented work on testimonial injustice and inferential articulation, pragmatist approach to radical hermeneutical injustices, and the Rorty-Price debate on the notion of truth.

Participated in the UBACyT project “Relativism, constructivism and scientific realism”, which critically examines scientific constructivism by discussing arguments from Goodman, Rorty, Putnam and Latour.

Author of “Carnap’s Structural Realism” (2012), examining Carnap’s position on the realism vs scientific antirealism debate.
